A friend of mine, also a teacher, who I haven’t seen in a while, too long if truth be told, joined me for lunch the other day. Now obviously we got to chatting about the kids we are teaching and we also chatted about their names.
It is possibly not well known but teachers do like to discuss the strange names we have in our classes. Some make us laugh, some make us cry and occasionally some make us recoil in abject pity for the poor unfortunate child.
She teaches the junior kids and this year her class has been the youngest.
Now the thing with the young ones is often they have no real understanding of the significance of their names unless it is fairly obvious as with John Brown where you get the obvious ’John is brown'followed by raucous laughter. This year though we have been presented with a name which has no current impact on the little soul who is lumped with it however she will be regretting her parents foolish choice in the not too near future.
The young girls is called Gentilia. Now I appreciate as much as the next person how her parents honestly considered her to be a precious delicate peach upon her arrival in the world however when she goes up to big school and sex education classes start she, along with all her classmates will be faced with the teacher explaining that male and female parts are called genitalia.
I defy the poor teacher to not steal a glance at the child. PVC banners announcing her arrival into the world of teasing will be what she feels have been plastered around her world.
I needed another coffee I can tell you!
